Food Faire at the Children’s Festival
This annual event has been co-sponsored with the Storytelling Guild for more than 40 years. Our Branch has charge of the Food Faire where we sell hot dogs, sno cones, and other tasty fare to the many families that attend each year. This is one of our main fundraising events.
In collaboration with JC Penney’s Medford store, several organizations pool their efforts to give 100 or more low-income children a back-to-school shopping spree. Our Branch supplies breakfast, volunteer shoppers and other helpers to guide these children through the experience and help them select the clothes they need. KidSpree is held at the store in August before school starts.
7th Annual Fall Garden Tour
Visitors oohed and aahed at the array of colorful flowers, fruits and
vegetables, artwork, lovely views, and towering trees they encountered
at each of the six gardens on our branch’s 7th annual Fall Garden Tour.
Twenty women served on the garden tour committee this year. They
started in February to select the gardens, then sold advertising, designed
graphics, wrote garden descriptions, edited the tour booklet and website,
worked with the garden owners, prepared and distributed publicity,
recruited volunteers, readied refreshments, sold tickets, guided visitors,
and assumed a myriad other tasks. An additional two dozen volunteers helped
welcome visitors on tour day, and many baked cookies.
Throughout the year we work to raise money to help several young women meet their educational goals. In May 2015 at the AAUW Funds/Scholarship Banquet we were excited to present scholarships to ten deserving women so they could continue their education at Southern Oregon University or Rogue Community College. We had the opportunity to hear their stories and join the celebration. This, for us, is the high point of the year.
